Normanston allotment 29th Nov 2012

Location: Normanston community allotment, Lowestoft.

Project: EastFeast and Waveney Food for Thought

Beginnings of a feasting area
When I left the allotment last week, Jake and Dano had just started work in the middle of the site, removing soil and unearthing bits of bricks and clearing a patch of land with a view to making it a feasting area.  Some of the salvaged bricks will be used to re-make the hard standing.

This morning Jake and Guy, a regular on the allotment, were already mixing concrete to secure the first of the polytunnel poles.  Whilst Guy headed off to get a pole cut, Jake and I dug the remaining holes and removed a couple of ancient-looking vines. These will be planted at the back of the site where they will get sun all day but the fence panel has to be painted first so we temporarily replant them in an unused raised bed.
Guy and Jake measure out the top pole for the polytunnel
Next job - David, another volunteer, and I weed and tidy some of the raised beds in the middle of the site.  By the end of the day it looks neater and we even manage to plant some broad bean seeds.
David picks some of the swiss chard - payment for the day's work
First hoop up!
By the end of the day, we've another weed-free area and 4 of the footings in place for the polytunnel.
