In February 2012 I took on my first proper allotment. I've grown veg for the last couple of years, mostly in raised beds where the soil was easy to manage. The soil on the new allotment isn't sandy - which is good since there is no water on site and it's a bit of a trek to lug water up here. It's not solid clay either, which should make digging ok, but given the bizzare weather we've had this year it's been difficult to time my digging to avoid water-logged soil or rock-can't-get-my-spade-into-the-ground-solid.
It's 3 miles down the road which is not ideal but it's the closest I could get to my home and it is bikeable...if I don't want to take a fork with me. But it does get full sun (when it chooses to shine) and the evenings up here a glorious. As you can see from the picture there's just a little work to do...
